David D. Rix
1933 - 2007

Born in Newport News, Va., to parents Leon and Emily Rix, he had a long career as a teacher of martial arts and self-defense techniques, serving as an instructor for the Baltimore County Police Department, teaching in county Recreation and Parks programs and founding the Center Place Learning Center, which included Defenders, Inc., where he continued to teach up to the time of his death, Jan. 5, 2007.

Dr. Rix was also well-known for his research and teaching in holistic personal development and for co-founding the Society for the Fulfillment of Living, which combined physical and spiritual teaching drawn from a variety of ancient and modern traditions.

Dr. Rix is survived by his wife and life long friend, Joann Price-Rix.

Self-Defense Instructor for Baltimore County Police Academy Entrance Level and In Service Training.

Founder/President of the American Chin-Na Association 1963.

Founder Director of The Defenders Club (Defenders Inc.) since 1963.
The Defenders Club was approved by the Maryland State Department of Education
on June 28, 1963 (approval # 1105).

Contracted through various Baltimore County Recreation and Parks Councils for
Self-Defense programs for Children, Women & Co-ed Adults since 1965.

Started teaching Self-Defense to the public in 1954.

Developed and conducted Tactical Training for 1992/1993 for OMNISEC
International, McLean, Virginia..

Maryland Police Training Commission Certified Instructor. June 18, 1992.

Certified Instructor for (DTI) Defensive Tactics Institute, Inc. Chemical Aerosol
Spray (Oleoresin Capsicum). July 31, 1993.

Certified Instructor for the Monadnock PR-24 Police Baton. January 15,1993.

Baltimore County Police Dept. Completion of "New Instructor School". April 7,1992.

Developed and conducted Tactical Training for the 1991 Basic S.W.A.T. School
hosted by the Baltimore County Police department Tactical Section. September
1991.

Founder and Educational Director of the Defenders, Inc. Tactical Team since 1991.

Self -Defense Instructor for Dundalk Community College Single Step Self-Defense
Program since 1974 (a program dedicated to the education of the Physically
Handicapped).

Instructor (Civilian Contract) for Howard County Police Officers (In-service
Training) from 1964 to 1965.

Instructor in MF-1 Hand to Hand Combat to Drill Sergeants stationed at Fort
